my son and I got tools, get-up and go...and dancing fer dayz...

we like costumes, music, food, large rubber duckies on wheels

My wife and I are looking for other burner-type parents. We want to make some connections for babysitting both in SD and onsite at Burning Man and other festivals.

I know there are other parents out there like us who want to take their kids to these events but still want to have some serious mommy/daddy time. Maybe we can help each other out...

Shrine of the Oven Mitt - and a chance to win a Burning Man ticket!

My friend Steve is looking for donations of oven mitts for his Burning Man art project. Each donated mitt will get you a chance to win a Burning Man Ticket!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Howdy Everyone!

In case the word hasn't gotten out yet, Burning Man decided my art
proposal was just silly enough...
http://www.burningm an.com/installat ions/08_art_ honor.html# shrine_mitt

I guess being the Giant Oven Mitt Guru has some value after all!

As part of the project my buddy Major Mallet and I have decided to
raffle a BM ticket, in exchange for Oven Mitts. Let those Oven Mitts
escape the kitchen!

If you have an oven mitt or two (or 300) that you are willing to part
with, you MIGHT just win yourself a ticket to Burning Man 08. Here's
the deal: Martini Steve, Killbuck and I are looking for oven mitts to
adorn our "Shrine to the Oven Mitt" art project:

http://www.burningm an.com/installat ions/08_art_ honor.html# shrine_mitt

We need lots of mitts to decorate the shrine appropriately.
Furthermore, we just also happen to have a spare ticket to the event.
Instead of just selling the ticket and purchasing the mitts we need,
we thought it would be more in tune with the spirit of the event to
encourage participation. So we are going to give the ticket to a
randomly chosen person from the pool of people who send us mitts.

How do you participate? Send your mitts and a note with your real
name, playa name (if you have one), mailing address, phone number and
email address to:

Steven Goodman
The Way of the Mitt
100 N Whisman Road, #1924
Mountain View, CA 94043

Email "steve at StevenGoodman. com" if you need a phone number for your
shipment.

Donations received on or before the June 14th 2008 (Flag Day - the
theme is the American Dream, afterall) will be registered for the
raffle. We will announce the winner (Playa name only) on this ePlaya
thread on June 16th. Donations received after that time will not be
eligible to win the ticket but will still be used for the project.

How will we choose a winner? You get one chance (or ticket) to win for
each different mitt you send us. Send us 18 different mitts – you get
18 chances to win. Send us 4 of the same mitt – get 1 ticket.
Homemade, store purchased, new or used mitts are all good with us.

We will put all of the tickets into a bowl and choose a winner and a
runner-up. The winner will have one week to acknowledge and arrange to
receive the ticket. If for whatever reason we cannot arrange the
ticket shipment / pickup with the winner, we will award the ticket to
the runner up.

How do you get the ticket? If the winning ticket holder is in the USA,
we will ship it UPS / USPS signature required. If the winning ticket
holder resides outside of the USA, we will have the ticket waiting for
you at Will Call.

Odds of winning: We have no idea – depends on how many people
participate. Taxes: The winner pays all of the taxes, duties, etc. on
this ticket. We are not liable for either a lost or misplaced ticket.
Everything else: We will just have to resolve any other problems and
concerns in good faith as they arise.
>>>>>

Thank You,
And may the Mitt be with You!

Steven Goodman
and
Major Mallet

I just found this tribe and figured I'd join. For those who don't know me, I run the bike repair in the 3:00 Plaza (7th year this year) and my daughter and I will be on the playa for our 8th year together. Oh yea...and she turns 8 on the 24th.

Mom has been to BM 5 times, but her teaching schedule messes that up for now.

child concessions

What special concessions do you feel there are in taking your kids out on the playa?

Has anyone felt they needed to try and schedule things for the kids, or was BM enough for the kids to just go and pop into things here and there?

My husband and I are both virgin burners but it became apparent a little while ago that it would be less work in planning (we think) to just take them. They're 8 and 5 years old. Boys. We're in a camp full of people who (most of) already know us and our kids.

They're both good campers and do well in the heat. They're also endlessly excited by the prospect of wearing whatever crazy thing they want, wearing goggles all the time, and drinking out of a tube from a backpack. They've been practicing. lol
One of many happy moments at BM 2007 with my kids

I thought the Happy Birthday Cake Mutant Vehicle (by Flight to Mars) was kind of silly until it sang Happy Birthday to me on my birthday. It was also the first time my 8, 7, and 3 year old kids were with me on my actual birthday. (I'm always at BM and this was their first year.)

It came cruising by us out on the playa and at first the kids thought it was just for me. This was about an hour after they had gotten to BM and also about 3 in the morning. They had been sleeping most of the way there and were to amped to go to bed so the two older boys jumped on their bikes and I walked occasionally carrying my 3 year old daughter on my shoulders.

We were about half way to the man coming from 9 and D and it came cruising by out of the darkness and I yelled "Hey, it's my Birthday" and they immediately broke into song, pausing for me and the kids to fill in my name. I think the driver slowed down a little but he didn't stop. It couldn't have been a more perfect moment. (Except maybe if my wife had been with us too; she stayed back at camp visiting who ever was still up.)

I think the best quote came from my second son: "Oh My God, Dad, Burning Man is so AWESOME!."

We're going to miss being out on the playa this year :( because I'll likely be in labor delivering our new twins :)!!!

We're living in central VA (richmond area) and starting over from scratch financially. We're living with friends and hoping for transitional housing to open up soon. As such, things are super tight on the money front. I have friends and family in Chgo who have done an amazing job of gathering up baby things for us, the problem is getting them back to VA. I'm hoping to stumble across some Burners heading back from the playa who have reason to stop through Chgo and have extra room in their truck, RV, etc. to bring back some or all of what's been gathered. I know there's 2 cribs (collapsable), 2 strollers, a changing table, cloth nappies and some baby clothes there for us.

If you know of anyone who might be willing to help out with this stuff and get it even close to us out east, PLEASE contact us!

in community,

I'm bringing my baby to Burning Man this year. The kid, who currently is unborn and whose gender I do not know, will be 2 months at that point.

Anyone have any experience with bringing really tiny babies at BM?

Is Dark Skies/Singularity A Burning Man Regional Event?

I think it would behoove the "communiy" to have a definite answer as
to whether or not "Dark Skies/Singularity" is an official Burning Man
Regional Event. If 'we' as a 'community' are to participate in
fundraisers to recoup debts derived from this event, we should know
exactly just what we are 'participating' in.

Is Dark Skies/Singularity a Las Vegas Burning Man Regional Event? Or a
Las Vegas Artisits' Event? If this is a combined event, then why is
there no mention of Burning Man on the Dark Skies website? And why is
the Dark Skies Survival Guide sorely lacking in the TEN PRINCIPALS of
BURNING MAN? Why is ALL discussion of the event steered ONLY to the
Dark Skies yahoo group, but not the LASVEGASBURNINGMAN yahoo group?

Who exactly decided to borrow money from other BURNING MAN REGIONALS
and the BURNINGMAN PROJECT to produce this event? There is a 'call'
out on the Las Vegas list to produce fundraisers to alleviate the debt
incurred, but where is the COMMUNITY discussion/decision to do so?

And WHO EXACTLY is the Las Vegas Regional? Is t one person? Two?
Three? or even four by proxy? Who decides this? Why does Las Vegas
need more than one Regional? Do ALL of them get free tickets to
Burning Man?

It is doubtful that any of these questions will be answered, because
it is unlikely that a dissenting view will be allowed to be posted.
However, by the off chance that one of the four moderators on this
list will allow such 'heresy', it might be prudent to ask each and
every one of the aforementioned questions.

My partner and I live in Vermont with our toddler and although we've been to Burning Man for years, we've never been with the baby, and know no burner parents. We're planning to bring our son, who will turn two just before we hit the playa. I'm new to tribe, but spent the day reading about kids on the playa. There seem to be lots of philosophical discussions about whether it's good or bad for kids, but not much discussion of practicalities or experiences. Advice from anyone who has been there with a kid his age would be much appreciated.

(cross posted in burning moms)

I haven't posted in a while, because my kid has grown into a teen. It is quite diffent being a parent of a teen than a kid.

I will bring my 14 year old boy. Who else is bringing teens?

This year it looks like none of my son's friends can go with us. Are there other teens going from the SF area who are interested in meeting before BM? Let me know.

Hey there, burning parents living in SF....... I am moving sometime in the next few months to the city (IN city, not east bay) and am looking for information/advice from those in the know about what areas are most hospitable to a mama and her 9 year old girlie. What neighborhoods are good? Bearing in mind that I know that all of the city is expensive, which areas are a little more affordable? Which are less? What are the schools like? I really appreciate any insight that any of you can offer. I will eventually be posting looking for another mama & kid or small family to set up a co-housing situation with, but that's a future post... thanks!!

Hi moms and dads,
I am a burning mom myself. My son is 14 years old and well adjusted. He is my best reference, but I got others.

I live in SF now and in the East Bay from summer 2007 on.

I just quit my job and would love to be around kids one or two days per week on a regular basis. In the meantime I am also available for on call sitting. I will not charge an arm and a leg, but some money in my pocket is always good. On occasion I am willing to trade several hours of babysitting for a good massage.

Do any of you have a daughter between 11 and 13 interested in having a pen-pal? My daughter is 12 and looking for a long distance friend...We live in Minneapolis, MN...I think she would click best with a girl raised by burners. We took her to the playa last week and she had an amazing time. We didn't really see anyone her age, and thought this might be a good place to find a connection for her. If you're interested please send me a private message and we'll trade info so they can start communicating.

We just visited the Lazy 5 Park yesterday and it is FABULOUS. $2 per person over 2 years old and just a sprinkled heaven... all shapes and sorts of water shooting, dropping, and spritzing about. Great for toddlers to about oh, maybe 8 years old... and of course parents who enjoy a nice hydration break. The park is small and connected to the public park with a hamster crawly climby thing for kids... and its just behind the new Yurt shaped library.

As you head up Pyramid Hwy just out of town and through "Spanish Springs" it will be on your right just behind a giant Yurt/library. http://www.rgj.com/news/stories/html/2005/07/28/105217.php

Rents and home prices are the cheapest in the bay area in this on the water crime free, anything goes little village that proudly does shit its own way with out bureaucratic bedfellows. live/work/ store fronts/period vintage homes...community pool..funkey neighbors who mind there own business as long as it doesnt fuck with their freedom to be quirky...you figure it out. I moved here two years ago, doubled my home value, can see stars at night and love it everyday. If you like "Northern Exposure and Maybury as well as Twin Peaks..youll fit right in.Very kid friendly!!!!!safe, old school california..a dying to extinct lifestyle.Check out craigs list but for an insiders report plus a list of cool spots/with landlord skinny...e-mail me. I live on a street thats two blocks off the water and has 13 burners with in three blocks..join us......

There continues to be discussion on a couple of lists I'm on about kids at Burning Man. Some people think that having children attend threatens their right of free expression. Some advocate having NO Children at Burning Man, or at the very least, a curfew.

Critical Tits Sculpture Collaborative

For people involved in creating a world wide collaborative art project representative of the critical tits ride at burningman. This project involves women from all over the world gathering on the full moon of each month and having a small/large gathering where they assemble a lifesize sculpture representative of a critical tits rider. As each group of women from all over the world assemble these sculptures on the playa in 2006 we *women* will unvail the largest collaborative art installation on the playa and in BurningMan history.

WE need your help to make this collaborative dream come true...

Be a part of your *female* burning community.
Participate in an art installation that will collaborate women from all around the world on the playa for BM06.

The object of this party is for the women participating to bond and create a lifesize sculpture of a critical tits rider to present on the playa with other female created sculptures. When all sculptures are presented together on the playa it will represent the world largest critical tits ride, and will bring women together throughout our burning communities on the full moons of each month in 2006.

Get involved in creating a world wide collaborative art project representative of the critical tits ride at burningman.

we need women whom would like to be a part of the performance line up, women whom want to help with the sculpture production to deliver, we need women to do it all, cuz I'm not gonna rely on any of the burner guys....hehe. No really Girls I am calling you out and I hope your on tribe because that is where we are going to be organizing this collaborative project...

I have been going for the last three years, and have always wanted her to experience BM in the flesh. I believe I'm finally prepared to be an awesome parent and host to my newbie daughter, and I'm ready for yet another amazing adventure this year as a family!

Looking for moms

Hi, I'm Harold Baize and I do stereoscopic (3D) photography. I have a web site of 3D photos from burning man. It has a gallery of images of each year since 1996.

http://3dculture.com/bm3d

I'm working on the 2004 gallery. That's where I need help. I'd like to include a couple of shots of children that I took this year, but to do that I need to get permission, and I'd like to send them a copy of their photo (in 3D ;-). Of course I asked before taking the pictures.

So there are two moms of kids I'd like to find:

1. Little girl (about 2 years old) near center camp with a giraffe hobby horse.

2. Mom and daughter at the critical tits party. Girl is about 10 years old with a painted face, mom has a nice air brush like painting on her chest.

Any help in locating these moms will be appreciated. See the image I added to this tribe's photos-- "Growling Tiger on the Playa", one of my all time favorite Burning Man photos :-)
Do any of you have experiences, andecdotes or observations you'd like to share? Do you think my friend is right?

Hey all,
We're doing our third annual in Santa Cruz this coming Saturday, October 9 at the Rio Theatre. 400 folks turned out for last year's event and I'd like to believe a good time was had by all.

You can check out all the details here: http://www.burningbeach.com/filmfestival2004.html .

This is a great warm up for the SF Decom and a great way to show Burning Man to folks who haven't attended. If you could spread the word, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for your consideration,

I have posted this in a couple of place but thought it wouldn't hurt to remind parents that there will be NO moonlight AT ALL during the 05 event. What moon will be visible will be during daylight hours except at twilight. It's gonna be a LOT darker than it was with the full moon this year. New Moon will be on Saturday ... Man burn day.

Just joined your fabulous tribe, I see some familiar voices here, (hey Kama!) and wanted to intro myself. I am the mayor of the village of kidsville on the playa and if there is anything I can do to squash any rumors or just support you bringing your kids to the burn let me know. Kama is quite brilliant at this as well.

See you on the playa 2005!

The big day of departure for the playa is nearing. Although my son won't be going this year, I would like to let all the other families know of our camp: camp NoseFish.

We are a cooling camp and a child friendly one at that. So if you are out there with your kids near the 3o'clock and your little ones are over heated or you just need a break: step into the Desert Nose and be cooled off and rest for a while.

desert nose at the 3:00 plaza

see you there

Fire Performers invited to Kidsville on Tuesday eve

Posting this on behalf of Orbit:

All Fire Performers are invited to join us at Kidsville on Tuesday, August 31, 2004. This will be our third year performing for some of the most appreciative burners on the playa.

Please come at dusk, bring your fire AND safety equipment. One area will be designated for fueling and spinning off. We almost always have more than one performer burning at a time; please make certain to watch for the children while performing. If you have friends that love drumming and making music, please invite them as well.

Thanks goes to those that performed and took turns doing fire safety over the past several years; truly, the children and their parents look forward to this event and have already inquired about the performance for this year. You've been inspirational.

Kidsville is located at Earth and 5:30. Stop by at dusk; the performance will probably last no longer than an hour and a half; still plenty of time to perform at other gatherings on the playa. Ask for Mike and/or Hans.

When I am on the playa, I carry a parasol, wear long sleeves and high boots, and stay under the sunshaded areas in t he intense sun, but that is because I'm old, and have suffered serious sunburns.

I have a hard time keeping hats on my son, let alone glasses. He will finally tolerate some sunscreen, but he got pretty burned on our last day at the beach, and I started wonder...

**How do you keep your baby burner from getting too burned?

Sunscreen dips? Favorite sunproof costume? Sneaky tricks?

Adults enjoy sharing packing lists; there is always something on someone else's list you never thought of that will make life that much cushier on the playa.

Obviously, what you pack specifically for a young person will depend on the individual's age and interests. What do you pack for kids? (Besides twice as many babywipes.) Do they have their own lists?

I'm Roxanne, one of the santa cruz regional reps, and a burning mom whose son will be coming with us again this year. Each year, we get inquiries from parents planning to bring their kids to the Playa who want to make contact with other families.

There has been some heated discussion on various lists re: children at burning man. In my opinion, children are essential to Community, and it is Community that brings me back to BM each year and keeps me connected year round.

My hope is to help people connect, and also discuss some of the issues. I'll just open the door and see where we go.

P.S. I usually do not carry a camera around on the playa. (So many others do.) This tribe needs a tribe photo. Anyone have pictures to post?

What's that in your mouth?

This didn't happen at Burning Man, but it's so common to kids, I wanted to bring it up.

True Story: We were at a friends' house, waiting to go to the church for their wedding. My son went to watch cartoons in their bedroom. Another little girl in the wedding party came to tell me that David had eaten vitamins and threw up. In fact, he'd eaten a handful of valium. Two hours before the wedding, the bridegroom was driving us to the emergency room, David dosed with epicac, to monitor his vital signs.

Everything ended well, thankfully.

But we know children put all manner of things in their mouths. When I think about the items I've found on the playa, in Center Cafe, in the porta potties, even lying around in camp that someone forgot to stash...

What concerns do you have about what your baby has put in her mouth on the Playa?
