Two-year-olds on the playa

My partner and I live in Vermont with our toddler and although we've been to Burning Man for years, we've never been with the baby, and know no burner parents. We're planning to bring our son, who will turn two just before we hit the playa. I'm new to tribe, but spent the day reading about kids on the playa. There seem to be lots of philosophical discussions about whether it's good or bad for kids, but not much discussion of practicalities or experiences. Advice from anyone who has been there with a kid his age would be much appreciated.

There is nothing quite as rockin' fun as a toddler on the playa. Seriously, you are going to have a blast. My husband and I are long time burners and in 2005, we brought our then 14 month old son for the first time.

It was awesome! We are planning to go again this year. I would love to chat more and meet up on the playa. If you are interested, drop me a line @ sarah@sarah.org

    Take care,

    Sarah

Visit the folks at KidsVille (previously known as Kids Camp). They have a tribe tribes.tribe.net/kidsville and an Email list. There's also a Burning Moms tribe burningmoms.tribe.net.

Good places to go from here.... and great places to be out there.

My first cross over with them was with an Art Car a few years ago... good peeps from those I've met and chatted with online. We're planning to camp near them this year with our just turning 2 year old.

My friend and I took my 2 yr old and her 3 year old to the Playa last year (husband/partner wimped out-it would have been nice to have the extra sets of hands though!).

It was a lot of fun - of a different kind than going "kid-less". There was a lot I didn't see last year, and my nights were not of the "dance and explore till the sun comes up" variety, like in the past.......I decided to put the experience in my blog so I could easily trot it it out for anyone interested (and so I won't bore anyone who has already seen it in one of the threads on this topic-way back when).

To sum it up-it WAS fun, it was a little exhausting being responsible for someone besides yourself, it was great to be in Kidsville with other parents who didn't all desert you at sunset, and I would do it again (maybe this year-still seeing how my overly busy summer shapes up). Plus, I think it was GOOD for her, contrary to some people's opinions.

My wife and I have two children (four and 17 mo).
We took our first child with us when he was a year and 1/2 old and again as a 2 1/2 to.
Both experiences were very postive for us as a family. I think that was the biggest reason for us taking him. To have the expereince as a family and that is exactly what happens to us while we are out there. It was very differnt for us than years before. We stay together and enjoy doing 1o times more caretaking than normal becuase my son could care less. To him, the playa is just anouther giant playground. with a lot more open space, it made it easier for us to let him explore without interuption but the further from camp he got , the more nervouse we got for his safety. We noticed that our camp, and we did camp (no RV) was like a mimi home. We have a rather large carport and shade structures that were very nessesary during the heat and dust storms. A hourly routine of hydration pushes and lotion baths were both fun and a bit tireing. My son did not seem affected by the heat or dust so much except on the second year his eyes stayed red and irritaed for a few days, almost enough that we thought of taking him home early, but he never complained, rubed his eyes or showed signs that he was uncomfortable. Eye drops and saline were awesome to have.
He loved playing with the other kids in and out of kidsvillle and we met lots of great child friendly friends. We noticed that somepeople at burningman are childphobic and have uncomfortable rections to seeing small children out there. Maybe they are in an adult frame of mind, or they simply get the sense that it is unsafe or cruel. My wife and I both thought the only cruel thing about it was forcing him to wear clothes and keep his sun exposure to a minimum. It was a lot of work and we didn't get out to venture even remotely enough for our personal taste, but that was not the point of taking him. It was about just being together, wherever we go.
While my duaghter attended only in my wife's belly, we have yet to take her and probably will not for another year or to. The truth is, it is an expensive campout. We have found that we can have very simular experineces doing smaller more intimate campouts with burner and artist friends without suffering the heat and high ticket prices. It might be differnt if there was a way to go to burningman and still party like we did before we had children, but our party now includes them. We change to reflect their inclusion.

loition, saline, eyedrops, pain and allergy meds, good first aid kits, long sleeve shirts, wide brim hats, fully enclosable structure, three wheel baby strollers or trauiler with really good shading, lots and lots of fruity baby food (hydrates them). baby wipes and tub for soaking, baby pool, fun and cute cups and bottles to drink from cuase the only way to keep them safe out there is to make sure they are incredibly hydrated even if you have to use a syringe. If they don't wet a diaper ever hour, they need more fluid.

It's not all but It might help.

I feel your pain & confusion.
I've been pregnant, nursing, & rasising 2 boys for the past five years.
Five years ago, was when I was planning to go,
    but didn't.
    Now that they are 2 & 4,
I'm ready to get my old "ME" back,
but it kinna sucks-coz I'll never be my old "ME"-ever!
    Trying to go to moontribe,
I gotta make this crazy arrangements...
& I'm really dying to go to BM,
    but...I don't know...
I think may be next year, we'll go by ourselves.
& the following year, when they are 4 & 6,
    we'll take them.
But for you, if you only have one child, it should be cool.
